Description:

 

Band is a large ensemble and small ensemble course that involves a wide variety of musical literature.  The basic fundamentals of musicianship will be an element of each class.  The band program consists of marching band, concert band, pep band, jazz band, and other extra-curricular music opportunities.  Band meets during the school day at its scheduled time; Mods 1, 2, and 3.

Course Objectives:

 

·          Play a musical instrument in a band setting

·          Explore several different styles of music

·          Performance in a small ensemble or as a soloist

·          Provide opportunities for student to excel with a musical instrument

·          Interpret the meaning of a piece of performed music

·          Understand and apply the basic fundamentals of music on a specific instrument

 

Rules of Conduct:

1.       Respect yourself, others, and classroom materials.

2.       Punctuality: BE ON TIME!!

3.       Maintain a positive attitude and look for solutions

4.       Cooperate with band director, staff, and band leaders

5.       Follow all school rules

6.       Take care of all music, instruments, uniforms, and supplies whether they are your own property or the school’s.

7.       Band office is off limits unless a director invites you in.

 

Attendance:

·          Students are required to attend all concerts/performances (including pep band). 

·          Attendance is the key factor in the grade of the student.  The director understands there are situations in which the student cannot attend a rehearsal or event and will work with the student to find an acceptable solution. 

·          If a concert or performance is missed because of a non-school event, students will be required to make up 15 mods of work/practice in the music department in order to receive full credit for that concert or performance.

 

Test/Quiz/Playing Evaluation Policy:

·          Students will know well in advance of a test/playing evaluation.  If a student takes a test and does not do well, the student will have an opportunity to take the test over again.  Students will be responsible for arranging a make-up time.

 

Homework:

·          Practice music

·          Practice toward excellence on a band instrument

·          Preparation of a solo or ensemble

·          Rehearsals/performance outside of school day

·          Mid-Quarter Grades:

Students will receive a mid-quarter grade if they are earning a “D” or below.

 

·          Semester Grades

Students will not be required to take a final exam.

 

Uniforms:

·          Each student is responsible for the care and safekeeping of his or her marching band uniform.  Any loss or damage of a uniform, or any of its parts, is the responsibility of the student.

 

School -Owned Instruments:

·          All school-owned instruments will be issued through the band director.  A contract will be given that explains your responsibilities.

 

Band Trips:

                Lourdes High School Band trips are educational and fun.  Band trips provide students with a musical experience away from school in an active and highly structured environment.

 

Open Mods:

                Students are welcome to use open office mods for individual practice and ensemble work.  Individual and group work from other classes may also be done during open office mods.
